My Mother: «Oh! A book! My son is a writer!»

Angelynn Grant, Communication Arts: This small book is a real page turner-you can't wait to see what the droll little characters are doing next. His naïve line drawings lend a piquant irreverence to what is ultimately a fairly-detailed account of how the Phoenician writing system evolved into the Western alphabet. From the Greeks to the Romans to the scribing monks to Guttenberg, it's all so much more delightful to contemplate while reading funny speech bubbles.

There's a great bibliography (if you want to get serious) and other sweet tidbits throughout. But the sweetest treat is that Leonardi will change how you look at type. How many designers can really do that anymore?

Pfff»

Antje Dohmann, Page: «... Das Buch bekommt jedenfalls das Prädikat "Unbedingt kaufen".»

Jan Middendorp: «Alessio Leonardi is not only a type designer and graphic communication adviser, he is also a cook, philosopher and comics fanatic.
All these functions blend together in his recent book, the fruit of many years of reflection: From the cow to the typewriter. In it, Leonardi retells the story of typography with the help of his Archetipetti, a friendly people composed of little creatures.
After having summarized the history of type from the points of view of the gods and of science, Alessio proposes his own vision.
He arrives at a shocking conclusion: the alphabet is nothing but a collection of arbitrary signs which could, in fact, have looked totally different and be equally usable.
With grace and style, Alessio reinvents the alphabet from scratch, creating, as it were, an Esperanto of writing. Awesome!»

Tina Canenbley: «...
